These are direct answers to the questions Canadians ask most about replacing windows: what it costs, which frame and glass to choose, what ENERGY STAR means now that zones are gone, insert versus full-frame installation, permits and bedroom egress, rebates and tax, warranties, timing, and how to compare quotes. Each answer links to the guide that explains it in full.
- Price depends mostly on window type, size, frame, glass and installation method; the planner shows how each moves the range.
- Compare certified whole-window ratings, not pane counts or frame materials alone.
- Installation decides real-world comfort and leaks; get the method, flashing and trim in writing.

FAQAll questions
How much does it cost to replace a window in Canada?
As a 2026 planning estimate, a medium vinyl casement with double low-e argon glass installed as an insert plans at $900 to $1,500. Sliders plan at $700 to $1,200 and picture windows at $650 to $1,200. Fibreglass, clad wood, triple glazing, larger sizes and full-frame installation raise the range.
How much does it cost to replace all the windows in a house?
Add up each window. A ten-opening mix of six casements, a large picture window, two small basement windows and a patio door plans at about $9,900 to $18,860 in vinyl with double glazing and inserts, and considerably more with fibreglass, triple glazing or full-frame on stucco.
Are triple pane windows worth it in Canada?
Often, in colder regions, on north- and east-facing walls, for large glass areas and in homes with condensation problems. In mild coastal areas, good double glazing may be enough. The planner prices triple glazing at 1.15 times double.
Should I choose vinyl or fibreglass windows?
Vinyl for value in standard sizes and light colours; fibreglass for large units, dark colours, slim frames or future repainting. They insulate similarly. The planner prices fibreglass at 1.3 times vinyl.
What makes a window energy efficient?
A low whole-window U-factor from multiple panes, low-e coatings, argon or krypton gas fill, warm-edge spacers and insulated frames, plus low air leakage and a well-sealed installation.
Do ENERGY STAR climate zones still exist in Canada?
No. Since January 1, 2020, ENERGY STAR Canada's version 5.0 specification has one national requirement: a U-factor of 1.22 W/m²·K or lower, or an Energy Rating of 34 or higher, for windows and doors. Zones 1 to 3 belonged to version 4.0 and still appear on older labels.
What is a good U-factor for windows?
Lower is better. ENERGY STAR Canada's U-factor path requires 1.22 W/m²·K or lower, and NRCan's 2025 Most Efficient level was 1.05 or lower. Compare whole-window values for each window type you are buying.
What is an insert replacement window?
A complete window fitted inside the existing frame after the old sashes are removed. It is faster and cheaper than full-frame replacement but reduces the glass area and clear opening and cannot fix hidden rot or missing flashing.
Does window replacement include trim?
Not always. Some quotes include new interior stops or casing and exterior capping; others leave them out. Check for 'interior trim and finishing' and 'exterior capping and flashing' in each quote.
Do I need a permit to replace windows?
Usually not for a same-size replacement in a house, but it is decided locally. Calgary and Toronto both exempt like-for-like replacements under conditions; enlarging, adding or, in Calgary, changing a window's type or operation needs a permit. Ask your municipality.
How big does a bedroom egress window need to be?
Alberta and Ontario guidance describe an unobstructed opening of at least 0.35 m² with no dimension under 380 mm, openable from inside without tools. Sill height and window well rules differ by province.
Can windows be replaced in winter?
Yes. Crews usually replace one opening at a time. Ask how they handle sealant and tape temperature limits, foam curing and any stucco patching in the cold.
How long does window replacement take?
Manufacturing usually takes the most time, because windows are built to measure after the installer measures. Installation of a typical house may take one day or several, depending on count, method and cladding.
Why are my windows foggy between the panes?
The edge seal of the sealed glass unit has failed and moist air has got inside. The durable fix is a new glass unit in the existing sash; NRCan describes defogging refurbishment as a temporary fix.
Should I repair or replace my windows?
Repair when the frame is sound and the problem is a replaceable part: glass unit, hardware, weatherstrip or trim sealing. Replace when the frame is rotten or out of square, water is getting in, or several parts are failing at once.
Are there rebates for new windows in 2026?
Some provincial, utility and municipal programs support windows, often requiring ENERGY STAR products. The federal Canada Greener Homes Grant and Loan have closed. Check official program pages before you sign.
Is window replacement tax deductible?
Generally not for your own home in Canada; articles about window tax credits usually describe US programs. For rental property, the CRA's current-versus-capital tests apply. Ask a tax professional.
Does home insurance cover window replacement?
Often for sudden insured damage such as storms, hail or break-ins, subject to the deductible. Not for wear, fogged units or gradual leaks. Check your policy wording.
What is the best window brand?
HAUSE Home does not rank brands. Judge a product by its certified ratings, construction, warranty terms and the installer's workmanship, and ask for the brand and series in writing so you can check them.
What warranty should replacement windows have?
Two warranties in writing: the manufacturer's product warranty, broken down by frame, glass seal, hardware and finish, and the installer's workmanship warranty. Ask about labour coverage, pro-rating and transfer to a new owner.
How do I compare window quotes?
Put them on the same basis: same windows, same installation method and same tax treatment. Then compare price per window, warranties and inclusions. The Window Quote Checker does this for up to three quotes.
Why do my windows sweat on cold mornings?
Moist indoor air is meeting glass colder than its dew point, usually along the bottom edge where the glass is coldest. Health Canada recommends 30 to 50 percent humidity; in a cold snap, lower it until the glass stays clear, and keep blinds open so warm air reaches the window.
Will new windows make my house quieter?
Usually, if the old windows leak air. The biggest gains come from airtight sashes and a sealed installation, then from glass design: a wider air space, panes of unequal thickness or a laminated pane. National Research Council testing found a third pane in a standard sealed unit changes sound blocking very little.
Will new windows stop condensation?
They reduce interior condensation by keeping the glass warmer, but a tighter house can hold more humidity. Run bath fans and the range hood, and keep indoor humidity appropriate for the outdoor temperature.
How do I choose a window replacement company?
Check any provincial licence that applies, liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage, installer training, and a written contract naming the product series, installation method, inclusions, schedule and both warranties. Compare quotes on completeness, not only price.
Can I replace windows myself?
Experienced DIYers sometimes install ground-floor inserts, but flashing, air sealing and square installation are easy to get wrong, some warranties depend on correct installation, and upper floors add fall risk. Weigh that against the installation warranty a professional provides.
What should I do if a window is broken right now?
Wear gloves and eye protection, keep children and pets away, and cover the opening with plywood or heavy plastic until it is repaired. If an insured event broke it, photograph the damage and call your insurer.
